Jacksonville Kayak Fishing Report - Week Ending Monday August 20, 2007
The summer doldrums have set in but the bite is still on for Northeast Florida's kayak fisherman. Early morning, late afternoon, and evening have produced some great fish.
Three-year old Christian Derringer (a.k.a. the "human fish finder") caught his first fish all by himself, a 13" flounder while fishing with his Dad Todd Derringer in St. Augustine. They totaled 11 flounder to 21" in the Pellicer region of St. Augustine.
Blake Beltz caught 7 reds to 28" and 4 trout to 21" in Clapboard Creek. Also in Clapboard, Eddie Cabler hooked up with 19 reds including 7 slot fish to 27", 12 trout, and 2 flounder for an inshore slam, and backed it up on another trip with 7 reds to 25", a 13" flounder, and several small trout.
Scott Foley had a nice day on Simpson Creek, landing 3 reds to 21", and 3 black drum to 18", and a 17" trout. Rich Slechta worked the Oak Harbor area for 13 reds including 5 slot fish to 26". James Payton landed 4 reds to 24" and 2 black drum near Dutton Island.
Andrew Mizell and girlfriend Courtney combined for 11 reds to 22" and a 20" flounder in the ICW near Beach Blvd. Brad Hatton and Mike Kogan combined for 42 reds including 28 slot fish to 28" in the ICW near the Atlantic Blvd. On another outing in Garden Creek Kogan totaled 24 reds including 9 slot fish to 27", 2 flounder to 22", 2 trout, and a black drum.
Mitch Granat worked Cedar Creek and landed a 24" red and 2 trout on topwater.Tom Owens scored a 15" flounder and 2 trout to 17" in Mill Cove. Scott Fisher landed 7 reds and a mangrove snapper in creeks near JEA off Heckscher Dr. Jeremy Anderson got the skunk off his new yak with a 22" red, a 12", flounder, a jack and some croakers.
Jeffrey McGovern caught 4 keeper flounder to 22" on topwater lures, 6 trout, and 4 reds for a slam at the 206 bridge in St. Augustine. Jud Miller and Jessica Lee got on a huge bite of yellow mouth trout in Ortega, catching over 60 fish with everything from shrimp to cigarette butts!
