Jacksonville Kayak Fishing Report - Week Ending Monday July 9, 2007
The summer pattern is finally getting established and Northeast Florida kayak fisherman had lots of great catches both inshore and offshore.
Todd Derringer and son Christian (a.k.a. the "human fishfinder") caught 5 trout to 20", 3 reds to 22", and 5 flounder to 16" enroute to an inshore slam in creeks off the ICW in St. Augustine ICW. In the same neighborhood Gary Shankland sight-fished 14 reds to 26".
Mitch Granat landed a 26" gator trout while kayak fishing with brother Lloyd in Sister's Creek -- the two combined for 9 trout including 4 fish from 20-26" and a flounder. Andrew Mizell went night kayak fishing and was rewarded with 25 trout to 21". Kyle Hamm brought in a slam with a 18" red, 15" trout, and a 14" flounder in the Sherman Creek area.
Todd Derringer of St. Augustine landed a 46" red during an awesome day in Mosquito Lagoon. On another trip back to the lagoon his dad, Tom Derringer, Sr. caught 11 reds over 30".
Scott Foley caught a bunch of jacks including a 6lb fish in Horseshoe Creek. Also in Horseshow Ken Harris landed 6 reds to 26". Jefferey McGovern brought in over 25 small jacks near the 206 bridge in St. Augustine.
Glenn Martin tallied 5 reds to 20", a 14" flounder and a black drum at Dutton Island. Mike Kogan hooked up with 9 reds including 8 slot fish to 25" in the Beach Blvd ICW area. Rich Sletchta had a great day in Simpson Creek hooking up 6 reds to 27" and 5 trout.
In offshore action although pogies have been scarce, several yak anglers had some success with dead bait and greenies they were able to jig up. Steve Rucker and Tom Hester landed 9 sharks to 4' fishing on Jacksonville Beach. Brett Hastings, Rusty Fissette, Brad Hatton, and Mike Kogan also got into some sharks off the beach in St. Augustine.
